Summary of Annual Meeting Business: Sessions 1 and 2

Delegates were busy debating and passing resolutions during Sessions 1 and 2 of ETFO’s 2015 Annual Meeting on Monday evening.

Delegates reinforced ETFO’s priorities as an organization for 2015-2016:

• To protect the collective bargaining rights of all members.
• To defend publicly-funded public education.
• To serve the needs of the membership.
• To provide for the professional development of members.
• To promote social justice in the areas of peace, anti-poverty, non-violence, and equity.
• To support international assistance and co-operation.
• To promote the care and protection of the environment.
• To actively engage members in the Federation.
• To promote and protect the health and safety of members.

Delegates engaged in a vigorous debate about how future votes on tentative agreements for central bargaining will be conducted. They determined that ETFO’s Constitution be revised to include language that all ratification votes for central bargaining shall be ratified by “a double majority” all-member vote conducted after duly-called information meetings.

The motion regarding central bargaining votes contains details about exactly how such votes will be conducted. To review that language, see the summary of resolutions debated at Annual Meeting yesterday.

Delegates supported a resolution sponsored by members from Peel Teacher Local and Greater Essex County Teacher Local regarding pension updates at the Annual Meeting. Delegates voted in favour of including a pension update of up to 15 minutes by the OTF Table Officer as a timed item at future Annual Meetings.

610 teachers, occasional teachers, education support personnel, education support personnel, and designated early childhood educators from across the Ontario have arrived to debate resolutions and set the union’s direction for the upcoming year.
