Maureen began her career in 1975 teaching in a variety of teaching roles from Kindergarten through Grade 8. During her career as a classroom teacher, she was actively involved in the Halton Teacher Local as a steward, executive member, vice-president and local president. She continued to support members and remain active in her union provincially as a member of Representative Council, provincial Executive member (female), and for six years as vice-president (female).

Throughout her career, Maureen supported the work of educators and unions while recognizing the significant contributions of social justice and equity in making a more fair society. She held the office of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation vice-president for two years and was the chair of the CTF Status of Women Committee and the Aboriginal Education Committee. Her passion and commitment to strong unions served her well in the roles of OFL executive board member for four years and member of the OFL Women’s Committee for six years.

Some of Maureen’s favourite memories included working with and learning from the ETFO standing committees; participating at the UN Commission on the Status of Women; representing ETFO in Cambodia to see the work that ETFO supported on behalf of Cambodian women in partnership with the Maddox Jolie Pitt Foundation; representing ETFO at the AIDS Vigil during World Pride; and the recognition of being part of an organization that makes a difference for our members and for a more just society. She recalls that one of her greatest career challenges was working with colleagues on the OFL executive board during a particularly difficult period for the organization.

Maureen enjoys spending time with her family. She remembers each day to be grateful for an amazing career and a wonderful retirement. Thank you ETFO!

Maureen is honoured to be the recipient of the ETFO Honorary Life Membership.
