Dennis Edney, lawyer for Omar Khadr, to speak at ETFO conference Wed. Aug. 17
TORONTO, August 16, 2016– In an age of fear and terrorism, Dennis Edney Q.C. is a voice of reason when it comes to the law. With a legal practice that has focused on criminal law, constitutional law and human rights law, Mr. Edney is best known as the lawyer for Omar Khadr who was detained in Guantanomo Bay. His litigation on behalf of Khadr began in 2004 and when Khadr was released on bail in 2015 he resided as a guest in Edney’s home.
On Wednesday August 17, Dennis Edney will be the guest social justice speaker at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) in Toronto. His address will be the “Rule of Law in an Age of Fear”.
In 2008, Edney received the National Pro Bono Award with an award citation that in part read “The fruits of his labour have not only increased access to justice for one individual but impacted human rights the world over.” Edney is the recipient of human rights awards from the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights among others. He has been named by Alberta Venture magazine as one of Alberta’s 50 most influential people and as one of Canada’s Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer. Edney has received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Ryerson University and the Canadian Civil Liberties Award for his humanitarian work.
Edney has lectured extensively on the Rule of Law throughout North America and was keynote speaker on behalf of Amnesty International at Trinity College, Dublin and in London England at the international conference on “Global Struggle against Torture” in 2005.
